We all have days that cause us to feel low energy. But sometimes, feeling a little tired is a symptom of a bigger issue. Here are some possible causes of low energy in men and how to rectify them.
-
Low testosterone
As we get older, the amount of testosterone our bodies produce decreases, which can lead to fatigue, depression and low energy. Other indicators that you might have low testosterone include irritability, erectile dysfunction, a decrease in body hair growth or beard growth, extra breast tissues and decreased muscle mass. Make an appointment with your doctor to get your testosterone levels checked.
-
Sleep issues
Insomnia and sleep apnea (interrupted breathing during sleep) can both lead to low energy. While insomnia may be about sleep quantity, sleep apnea may be more about sleep quality. Ask your doctor about enrolling in a sleep study.
-
Poor nutrition
Most of us already know that a diet filled with junk food can cause low energy. For younger men who exercise a lot or lift weights, or for older men who don’t eat enough, nutritional deficiencies can easily be rectified by changing your diet.
-
Lack of exercise
Although it sounds counterintuitive, exercising can increase adrenaline and your energy levels. Although you don’t want to exercise to the point of fatigue, regular amounts of moderate exercise can help with low energy.
-
Depression
If you’ve ever suffered from depression, you know that it can leave you feeling like you have low energy. You may even lose interest in things that are normally fun. Your doctor may be able to treat you for depression via therapy, medication or a combination of the two.

Other medical conditions
From iron deficiency and diabetes to thyroid disorders and heart disease, there are plenty of medical conditions that can contribute to fatigue. Be sure to get a physical and lab work done regularly to rule out any health concerns.
