Sick of your boring wardrobe and need a fix? Or maybe you just don’t know the “rules” of men’s fashion. Let’s start with some basics to bring your sense of style up to date.
-
Your pants’ cuffs should graze the top of your shoes
Anything too high and you’re waiting on a flood. Too low and you could look like you’re playing dress-up in your dad’s pants.
-
Choose between suspenders or a belt
Both accessories are designed to hold up your pants. You don’t need both at once.
-
Shoes don’t have to be brown or black.
Try tan, gray, navy or even a bright red pair of casual sneakers.
-
Match your socks to your pants
Sure, there are times you can show off your fun side with a brightly colored (or patterned) pair of socks. But when it doubt, match your socks to your pants, not your shoes.
-
Wear layers
Not only do layers look good (if they’re properly fitted), but it also allows you to transition from daywear to a nighttime look.
-
Wear buttonless collars with a suit
Those button-down collars aren’t made to be worn with suits. Save those to wear with slacks and opt for collar tips with no buttons when you really get dressed up in your best suits.
-
Choose patterns to compliment your build
If you’re a bit thick around the middle, try vertical stripes. If you’re tall and thin and want to look more built, opt for broad checks.
-
Try a new necktie knot
You can find videos on YouTube and play around until you find one you can master.
-
Skip the visible logos
Your fancy brands shouldn’t be on display for everyone to see. The logo should be on the tag, not on your shirt.
